East Atlanta: Neighborhood Guide
East Atlanta is one of the city's most colorful intown neighborhoods, known for its tree-lined streets of bungalows and its lively village center. East Atlanta Village, usually just called EAV, is packed with bars, restaurants, live music and street art.
A short history
Long before Atlanta existed, a Creek trade trail ran through the area. That trail later became Flat Shoals Avenue, still the neighborhood's main street today.
In July 1864, the Battle of Atlanta was fought here, one of the key battles of the Civil War. Historic markers, including two upturned cannons, still mark the site.
After the war, a crossroads store at Glenwood Avenue and Flat Shoals Road grew into a small business district, and streetcar lines brought new homes. Residents voted to join the City of Atlanta after 1915, and the neighborhood filled in after World War II.
The 1960s and 70s brought hard times, but residents formed the East Atlanta Community Association in 1981 and worked to bring the village back. It was voted Atlanta's "Best Neighborhood" in 2007 and 2008, and it has remained one of the city's most popular places to live.
